In the spring of 2002, Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Group was retained by the City of Ottawa through Cumming Cockburn Limited and Dillon Consulting Limited to conduct an archaeological impact assessment (Stages 1 & 2) on a 7 km section of the proposed right-of-way (ROW) of the Terry Fox Drive Extension between Campeau Drive and March Road in the former City of Kanata. The ROW follows the Carp River Flood Plain before rising up onto the Carp Ridge, an isolated extension of the Canadian Shield which penetrates the clay plains of the Ottawa Valley. The assessment was carried out in accordance with recommendations stemming from an environmental assessment study conducted in October 2000.

Recognizing the Precontact, as well as the historic archaeological potential of the region, CRM Group designed an assessment strategy which combined archival research, field reconnaissance, visual assessment and shovel testing to locate and identify archaeological resources within the ROW.

Although no Precontact resources were identified within the ROW, the field survey identified the remains of three separate 19th century farmsteads scattered across the flood plain and the ridge. Management strategies were formulated by CRM Group for implementation by the City of Ottawa.
