Salvage Excavation and Construction Monitoring at Fort Edward National Historic Site
Windsor, Nova Scotia

In the Spring of 1999, the Department of Canadian Heritage - Parks Canada initiated plans to stabilize the blockhouse and upgrade walkways at Fort Edward National Historic Site located in Windsor, Nova Scotia. In accordance with Parks policy, archaeological salvage and monitoring were incorporated into the construction schedule. CRM Group was retained by Parks to oversee the archaeological component of the assignment.

CRM Group's archaeological team monitored the mechanical excavation of various walkways and trenches, documenting and investigating the archaeological resources exposed during the course of mechanical excavation. In order to minimize impacts, the archaeologists manually excavated areas of particular sensitivity.

CRM Group proposed minor modifications to the design specifications which minimized impacts to a previously unidentified mid eighteenth century cook house.
