Archaeological Mitigation at St. George's Round Church and the Little Dutch Church
Halifax, Nova Scotia

In the Spring of 2000, St. George's Round Church and the Little Dutch Church were the focus of archaeological attention as preparations were made for the placement of interpretative panels at the two historic sites. Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Group was retained by the Parish Council to archaeologically assess and clear the two small areas to be impacted by the signage.

Although the proposed impacts at the site of the Round Church were limited, there was concern that placement of the signage could impact the site of a mid to late eighteenth century residence which occupied the site prior to construction of the church. Fortunately, only a few small ceramic sherds from this early Halifax occupation were encountered during the assessment.

Excavation at the Little Dutch Church revealed the location of an early stone drain which passed through the cemetery in the very area to be impacted by the signage. A minor revision to the base of the interpretative panel avoided any impact to the drain. No burials were encountered during the course of the investigations.
